Mechanical Engineer (Contractor)
Design and build the mechanical hardware around the first coil articles: fixtures, cradles, vacuum interfaces, and the bench structures they mount to.

Build the first machine with us.
Laurelin’s first campaign turns a drawing set into hardware on a bench. This role owns the mechanical work in that path: coil winding fixtures, test stands, alignment features, vacuum-adjacent structures, and the tooling the build actually needs.
You would work on site with the founding engineering team, carrying parts from CAD through fabrication, inspection, and assembly. The scope is defined per statement of work, and strong contract work here converts to a larger role as the program grows.
What you would own
- Design fixtures, cradles, stands, and structural hardware for coil fabrication and bench testing.
- Carry parts through vendor fabrication and in-house machining, with inspection against the drawing.
- Own tolerance stacks, alignment schemes, and fastening and sealing details on the bench.
- Assemble, fit, and iterate at the bench, and keep the CAD current with what was actually built.
What we are looking for
- Shipped mechanical hardware from CAD through fabrication and assembly.
- Strong command of GD&T, tolerance analysis, and design for machining.
- Hands-on shop competence: you can build and correct what you design.
Especially useful
- Vacuum hardware, cryogenic fittings, or electromagnet fixture experience.
- Experience in a small team where the designer is also the builder.
